Latinx in the US South: Futurities, Histories, and Practices of Un-Settling

October 12, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:15 pm

This event qualifies for 1.25 hours of credit toward the annual Gillings School inclusive excellence training requirement for faculty and staff.

As NC continues to grow and attract more residents, we must look towards the various futures we envision and reckon with the histories that might map out how we accomplish them. This panel urges Duke and surrounding campuses to reinvest in regional histories that provide the architecture for understanding the U.S. South as we know it today. Specifically, one that considers histories of anti-Blackness, precarity, labor and assimilation that have brought various groups of “Latinxs” to the South.

Panelists:

Dr. Deshira Wallace (UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health)
Dr. Sophia Enriquez (Duke Music)
Dr. Cecilia Márquez (Duke History)
Dr. Javier Wallace (Duke AAAS)

Moderated by Dr. Sarah Bruno (Duke Cultural Anthropology & FHI)

Registration required.
