Honduran Health Alliance Practicum Information Session

The Honduran Health Alliance (HHA) is seeking 2 UNC public health students to serve in a leadership capacity for the 2019-2020 year. Travel expenses to and from Honduras and all expenses while in Honduras will be covered with a $125 one-time program fee. This position is appropriate for SPH practicum credit.

Organization Description:

HHA is a student-led organization within UNC’s School of Medicine that partners with a cooperative in Honduras known as Comunidades Unidas and the Honduran Planned Parenthood International Affiliate, Ashonplafa to reduce the burden of cervical cancer through health education and a reproductive health clinic every July. HHA also exists to provide an educational opportunity for rising 2nd and 4th year UNC medical students in an underserved setting.

Position Description:

The leaders are responsible for leading HHA as an organization at UNC and in Honduras. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Facilitate the spring 2020 semester long course to prepare medical students for the trip
  • Write/revise health charlas or “chats” on women’s health topics to be used during the trip
  • Lead steering committee meetings on a quarterly basis
  • Participate in a 5 day logistics trip to Honduras in spring 2020
  • Work with two medical student leaders to lead and plan the three-week summer trip
  • Design and conduct a research study of your interest (optional)

Qualifications:

  • Excellent oral and written Spanish communication skills (strong Spanish skills preferred)
  • Interest in women’s reproductive health, domestic violence, and research
  • Interest in the intersection between medicine and public health
  • Interest in public health education and program management
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail
  • Experience traveling or working abroad (preferably in Latin America)

Applicants must be willing to spend 5-6 hours per week during spring 2020 semester teaching the HHA course, be available to travel to Honduras during the spring (dates flexible), and be available for the entirety of the three-week trip in June/July 2020. Applicants must also be willing to spend 2-3 hours per week during the fall 2019 semester to train the new leaders. Preferred applicants will be returning as a masters or doctoral student for the 2019-2020 school year.
