Fishing, Oil Spills and Community Activism: A year as a visiting professor in Bahia, Brazil

January 27, 2021 @ 12:20 pm - 1:10 pm

All are invited to the weekly Environmental Sciences and Engineering In-House Seminar Series, which begins virtually on Jan. 27 at 12:20 p.m. with Dr. Amanda Northcross presenting “Fishing, Oil Spills and Community Activism: A year as a visiting professor in Bahia, Brazil.”

The traditional fishing communities in Bahia, Brasil are facing several environmental health challenges. The industrial sources of the pollutants impacting these communities include smelting, agriculture and petrochemical processing. As a visiting professor at the Federal University of Bahia in the department of Environment, Work and Health in the School of Medicine, Northcross worked with faculty members, unions from the fishing communities and the state and local government to assess the impact of air and water pollution on health. Through hands-on course work, engaged community research projects and as a member of an emergency response team, Northcross’ team developed tools to communicate risk, assess exposures and identify the most impacted communities.

This seminar aims to demonstrate:

  • Faculty collaboration with local government and community activists to respond to environmental health concerns.
  • The intersection of history, race and social justice that directly impacts the environmental health of fishing communities in Bahia, Brazil.
