Ms. Charletta Evans

Charletta Sims Evans, MEd, has been named the new assistant dean for student affairs at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, effective Oct. 3.

“Charletta brings a wealth of experience to this position,” said Anna Maria Siega-Riz, PhD, associate dean for academic affairs at the public health school. “She’s worked with students in higher education, counseling, mental health, program development and diversity training for more than 18 years, and she has an outgoing and inclusive personality. We believe she will be a strong advocate for students and an immensely valuable ally and asset for them and for the entire school.”

Evans will lead the Office of Student Affairs, providing student outreach and recruitment, advising and counseling on academic and career choices, preventing and managing disputes and grievances that involve students, advising and supporting student organizations and leadership, upholding the student honor code and ensuring student safety, communications with students, and school wide student events including orientations and commencement. She will report to Siega-Riz.

Evans comes to UNC from the North Carolina Community College system, where she has been associate director of student leadership and development since 2006. Prior to that position, she worked in Raleigh at Meredith College (2001-2006), Shaw University (1999-2001) and St. Augustine’s College.

Evans earned a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation with a minor in psychology from Winston-Salem State University (N.C.) in 1992, and a master of education in guidance and counseling from Bowie State University (Md.) in 1997.

In 2003, she received The Young Adult Leadership Award, presented by The Women’s Forum of North Carolina Inc. The award honors a young North Carolinian, age 18 to 35, who has demonstrated leadership in improving the lives of North Carolinians, especially females.

A native of Mt. Olive, N.C., Evans is married to Darrin Evans and lives in Raleigh.

Evans succeeds Felicia Mebane, PhD, who has been assistant dean for student affairs since 2005. Mebane is stepping down from her role as assistant dean to pursue other career opportunities but will remain at the school as a consultant through a transition period.

“Felicia has been an exceptionally creative and dynamic leader in the school, advocating for students and initiating creative programs like the Summer Public Health Fellowship Program,” Siega-Riz said. “She is an effective and inspiring guide for students and student groups. We are fortunate that she is willing to continue to offer her counsel and advice.”
