Dr. Evan Dellon

Evan S. Dellon, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine in the UNC School of Medicine and adjunct assistant professor of epidemiology in UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, was awarded the University’s Phillip and Ruth Hettleman Prize for Artistic and Scholarly Achievement by Young Faculty.

Dellon applied his intellect, imagination and drive to conduct groundbreaking research in EoE, a newly recognized chronic disease characterized by the abnormal presence of eosinophil in the lining of the esophagus. Eosiniphils, a type of white blood cell, helps fight infections, but when it infiltrates the esophagus, it can lead to asthma and allergic diseases.

Three other faculty members also were awarded the 2012 Hettleman Prize. They are Malinda Mayor Lowery, associate professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences; Kimryn Rathmell, associate professor in the departments of medicine and genetics in the School of Medicine; and Yang Yang, associate professor of sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences. All four were recognized by Chancellor Holden Thorp at the Sept. 7 UNC faculty council meeting.

The Hettleman Prize, which carries a $5,000 stipend, recognizes achievements of outstanding junior tenure-track or recently tenured faculty. Phillip Hettleman, who was born in 1899 and grew up in Goldsboro, N.C., established the award in 1986. He earned a scholarship to UNC, went to New York and in 1938 founded Hettleman & Co., a Wall Street investment firm.
