Das awarded 2013 P.K. Sen Distinguished Visiting Professorship
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill welcomes Dr. Kalyan Das from the University of Calcutta, India to the biostatistics department as the 2013 P. K. Sen Distinguished Visiting Professor in Biostatistics. Das is visiting our department from January 11 to June 30, 2013, during which time he will conduct research, give lectures and interact with faculty, students, and the university community. The professorship seeks to recruit aspiring international scholars in statistical science to UNC – with a preference for those from developing countries. Das, the second recipient of this award, is highly qualified for this appointment and was selected following an international search conducted by the department.
Das is currently a professor in the Department of Statistics, University of Calcutta, India. He obtained his
PhD in Statistics from the University of Calcutta in 1986, where he also received his bachelors and master’s degrees. He has authored or co-authored over 40 refereed publications in scholarly statistics journals in areas including Bayesian computation, small area inference, generalized linear mixed models, longitudinal data analysis, survival frailty models, genetic epidemiology and pharmacogenetics. On Jan 28, 2012, Professor Das gave a seminar in the department titled “Robust Inference for generalized partially linear mixed models subject to censored responses and missing covariates.” Additionally, with Research Professor John Preisser of the department, he is co-author on an abstract for the Joint Statistical Meetings in Montreal to be held August 3-8, 2013, “Logistic Regression for Dichotomized Counts.”
The department looks forward to benefiting from his intensive interaction with our faculty and students in regards to both methodological and inter-disciplinary research, and expects that he will further expand the reach of work begun here in Chapel Hill upon his return to India.
