Cover photos of the NCATS reportsThe Interstate Collaborative for Widespread Implementation of the Ten Steps was designed to address the need to accelerate the systematic implementation of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as essential maternity care practices associate with optimal breastfeeding. As it includes states, regions and large urban areas, it has been renamed The National Collaboration for Action on the Ten Steps, or NCATS. Originally supported by AHRQ to produce the short-term outcomes, below, it is now supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, with platform support from USBC, to provide an ongoing catalyst for implementation of best practices.

The original short-term aims were to: 1) define best practices for implementation of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding on a state-by-state basis through collaboration among states, regions and other units with active programs, and 2) develop a specific research agenda for further study of opportunities and challenges to systematized implementation of evidence-based breastfeeding support in America’s hospitals.

The long term goals are to: 1) advance adherence to evidence-based and innovative strategies to increase breastfeeding rates in United States’ maternity centers, and 2) increase the number and quality of studies regarding the effectiveness of the World Health Organization’s Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative in the United States to reduce costs and increase impact.
