CGBI: National Collaborative for Advancing Breastfeeding in Child Care

The National Collaborative for Advancing Breastfeeding in Child Care (NCABC) was established to address promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding in the child care setting. The NCABC is committed to sharing best practices that guide coalitions, state governments, child care and others to implement programs and policies that build infrastructure to support a breastfeeding-friendly child care environment.

Preliminary Report

Representatives from 12 states with active statewide breastfeeding support in child-care programs or with recent funding to develop a program, and two national organizations active in support of breastfeeding in child-care settings, gathered in Chapel Hill in May 2013 for a day-long meeting to share program activities, identify common issues and summarize lessons learned in creating programs to protect, promote and support breastfeeding in child care. This meeting was supported by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, with additional resources from the Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute. Participants included representatives from Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin; the national organizations were the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC).

Goals of the NCABC

The original short-term aims of the collaborative were to:

• Define best practices for implementation of initiatives to support breastfeeding in child care, through collaboration among states with active programs
• Identify, where possible, the evidence base for specific program components
• Reach consensus on how to continue to work together to further common aims

The tentative long-term aims are to:

• Promote evidence-based innovative strategies to increase breastfeeding promotion and protection in child care settings
• Facilitate replication of best practices through tool kits
• Further document and disseminate lessons learned over time
• Continue to expand membership to include representatives from all areas (e.g., states, large metropolitan areas) in which there is an interest in collaborating at the state and national levels
