CGBI: Breastfeeding Exclusive Winter 2019 - ENRICH Carolinas

ENRICH Carolinas Project Update

ENRICH Breastfeeding coach, Gigi Lawless (right) poses for a picture with team members from Duke Regional and Duke University Hospitals at the learning collaborative meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

ENRICH Carolinas aims to help maternity hospitals and surrounding communities in North and South Carolina along their journey in implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. Funded by the Duke Endowment, the project continues to work with 19 hospital communities through 2020 to provide breastfeeding and quality improvement technical assistance directly to hospital teams, prenatal care and child care facilities.

In December 2018, ENRICH staff, partners, and hospital teams came together in Chapel Hill, NC to attend the project’s first Learning Collaborative Meeting. The agenda brought nationally and locally renowned speakers to share on important topics and the latest research in breastfeeding, maternity care practices, quality improvement, and change management. Interactive discussions related to the Baby-Friendly and the North Carolina Maternity Center Breastfeeding-Friendly designation processes were also incorporated into breakout sessions. Facilities had direct access to leaders from both Baby-Friendly USA and North Carolina Department of Health and Hospitals Division of Public health to ask questions and gain insights into their specific situations. The sharing and engagement was nothing short of inspiring, both for hospital teams and the ENRICH coaches and team members in attendance. We want to congratulate our teams on how far they have come, and for where they are heading. Congratulations to Columbus Regional for their recent Baby-Friendly designation and to UNC Women’s Hospital for being re-designated as a Baby-Friendly facility.

We look forward to this next year as ENRICH teams continue to make progress in their improvement journeys!
