The fall semester was a successful and productive one for the Carolina BEBES student group. In addition to a guest lecture on infant and young child feeding in emergencies by CGBI Associate Dr. Aunchalee Palmquist, the BEBES began a fundraiser selling totes and stickers to increase breastfeeding awareness, and to benefit Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a nonprofit organization that provides information, resources, and support for breast cancer patients and survivors. A portion of proceeds will also be used to support future BEBES events.

It’s not too late to donate – canvas totes and vinyl stickers are still available!

Last semester also wrapped up the third annual Diaper Drive benefitting the NC Diaper Bank and their community partners. Following a BEBES Shower kick-off event, donations were collected from students and staff in the schools of public health, medicine, social work, and pharmacy. More than 1500 diapers and 2500 wipes were donated to meet diaper needs in our local communities, as well as some children’s books and feminine hygiene products. Thank you to all who contributed!

As we begin a new semester, the BEBES had a productive kick-off meeting and we are excited to finalize plans for upcoming events. Some of these events include a community health fair, educational lectures about maternal mental health and doula support, a tour of the local milk bank, volunteering at the NC Diaper Bank, and an annual sex trivia night with the UNC Office of Student Wellness.
