Amy Sanchez, MD, IBCLC

Amy Sanchez, MD, IBCLC is a Chapel Hill native and graduate of UNC School of Medicine (2006). She completed Family Medicine residency at the Austin Medical Educational Program (now known as UT Southwestern Austin) in 2009. Currently, Amy is completing MPH in Healthcare and Prevention at UNC, as well as completing her Preventive Medicine Residency at UNC. Her clinical work during residency involved establishing a breastfeeding support clinic at the UNC Family Medicine Center. In her MPH program, her research project and masters paper entailed an evaluation of the program, “The Effect of Integrated Breastfeeding Support in an Academic Family Medicine Clinic”. Her evaluation showed statistically significant increases in ‘any’ and exclusive breastfeeding at two months, as well as clinically significant increases in ‘any’ breastfeeding at four and six months.

Amy is also a board certified lactation consultant, and received her lactation training through the Mary Rose Tully Training Initiative. Her interests include maternal and child health policy, medical student/resident education on breastfeeding, models of delivery for lactation support, and program evaluation. After finishing her current residency and MPH program, Amy will be moving to Hawaii with her husband and two daughters. She plans to continue working clinically with breastfeeding mothers and children. And, she may even take up paddle board yoga!
