Google.org funds UNC, VUMC research into COVID-19 genetic impact
September 10, 2020 Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt University Medical Center have been awarded $500,000 by Google’s philanthropy, Google.org, to study how COVID-19 alters gene expression in some people in ways that may be linked to their risk of severe illness and death.
Golden named vice chair of Department of Health Behavior
September 8, 2020 Dr. Shelley Golden, associate professor of health behavior at the Gillings School, was named vice chair for academic affairs in the Department of Health Behavior. The appointment became effective September 1.
Rapid funding aids COVID-19 research by top Gillings scientists

Christenson-Diver named AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow
August 10, 2020 Dr. Elizabeth Christenson-Diver, a postdoctoral research associate at the Gillings School, has been awarded a Science & Technology Policy Fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Her placement is with the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs — specifically, the Office of Canadian Affairs.

Harrison elected board vice president of the National Association of County and City Health Officials
August 4, 2020 The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) elected UNC Gillings School alumna Lisa Macon Harrison as vice president of the organization’s 2020–2021 board of directors. She has served as director of the Granville Vance District Health Department in North Carolina since 2012.
NSF funds UNC scientists to explore potential COVID-19 aerosol transmission
August 3, 2020 In an effort to further our understanding of how COVID-19 is spread, the National Science Foundation has funded a team of researchers at the Gillings School, led by Dr. Barbara Turpin, to study the SARS-CoV-2 virus' potential for aerosol transmission.
Suzanne Maman named associate dean for global health
July 28, 2020 Dr. Suzanne Maman has been appointed associate dean for global health, the Gillings School’s chief global leader and liaison, responsible for evolving global strategy and global health initiatives. She will begin this role on Sept. 1.
North Carolina Policy Collaboratory distributes $29 million for COVID-19 research
July 22, 2020 The North Carolina Policy Collaboratory funded 85 projects across 14 UNC System schools, including $6.1 million for COVID-19 research at the Gillings School and $1 million allocated to each of the six historically minority-serving institutions.
Anderson named founding dean of UC San Diego school of public health
July 21, 2020 Dr. Cheryl Anderson was named founding dean of the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at the University of California San Diego.
