UNC Gillings remains No. 1 public school of public health in US

Once again, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Gillings School of Global Public Health was ranked by peer leaders as the number one public school of public health in the United States — and tied for number two overall. The rankings were published on March 29, 2022, by U.S. News and World Report.

Impact Awards: 3 Gillings students lead research and discovery in NC

The UNC Graduate School has named 11 students as recipients of its 2022 Impact Awards, which celebrate research that contributes to the well-being of North Carolina communities and citizens. Three of the awardees are graduate students in the Gillings School.

Woods brings science to N.C. communities’ fight against environmental hazards

For more than a decade, Dr. Courtney Woods has focused on participatory research – a method that allows her to tap local expertise to support communities experiencing environmental racism. With funding from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, she created the Environmental Justice Action Research Clinic. It will function like a legal clinic to provide timely technical support to local responses to critical environmental health concerns.

UNC researchers to lead 2 centers for $170M NIH Nutrition for Precision Health Consortium

Understanding how people differ in both their metabolism and their bodily response to what they eat and drink is critical to tailoring diets for an individual’s optimal health. To that end, Gillings School researchers will direct both a $13 million Nutrition Precision Health Clinical Center and a $19 million Metabolomics and Clinical Assay Center.

Phares appointed chief scientific officer at National Pharmaceutical Council

The National Pharmaceutical Council named Dr. Sharon Phares as their new chief scientific officer. In this role, the UNC Gillings alum will direct strategy and oversee research related to policy issues relevant to the pharmaceutical industry.

$12M NSF grant will establish nationwide atmospheric measurement network

Dr. Jason Surratt will serve as UNC's principal investigator on a large National Science Foundation-funded project to determine the content of airborne particulate matter, which has significant effects on health and climate change. He will oversee one of 12 research sites that, together, will form the Atmospheric Science and mEasurement NeTwork (ASCENT).

Researchers receive $17M grant to explore links between environmental contaminants and liver cancer

Members of the UNC Center for Environmental Health and Susceptibility at the Gillings School will support NCSU researchers in implementing a $17M grant exploring links between contaminants — such as cadmium and PFAS — and Hepatocellular Carcinoma, a type of liver cancer that disproportionally affects racial and ethnic minority populations.

Governor Cooper appoints Greene as chair of NC State Health Coordinating Council

Dr. Sandra Greene, co-director of the program on healthcare economics and finance at the Sheps Center and professor of practice in health policy and management at the Gillings School, was recently appointed as Chair of the North Carolina State Health Coordinating Council by Governor Roy Cooper’s office.

Baric among 9 to receive 2020-21 North Carolina Awards, state’s highest honor

Dr. Ralph Baric has been selected as a recipient of the state’s highest civilian honor, the North Carolina Award. He will receive the 2020 North Carolina Award for Science to recognize his work in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
