Article by three Gillings researchers is Journal of Human Lactation’s top-read post for 2017

January 26, 2018 Three researchers linked with the Gillings School’s Department of Maternal and Child Health co-authored the Journal of Human Lactation’s most-read article of 2017. Their systematic review examined Step 3 of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, an outline for maternity practices that serves as the foundation for the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.

Gillings School’s breastfeeding institute awarded major grant from The Duke Endowment

November 30, 2017 The Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute, based at the Gillings School, has been awarded a 3-year, $830,000 grant from The Duke Endowment. The grant will be used to expand CGBI’s work with hospitals and communities in North and South Carolina for the purpose of promoting and supporting breastfeeding.

October 4, 2017 Catherine Sullivan, director of the Gillings School's Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute, was selected as a fellow in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.

Online calculator estimates the impact of changes in breastfeeding rates on population health

September 15, 2017 Dr. Alison Stuebe led a group of researchers who developed an online calculator to estimate the impact of changes in breastfeeding rates on population health. The research was published online Sept. 15 in the journal Breastfeeding Medicine.

Lack of optimal breastfeeding may cause alarming disparities in infant deaths, study finds

Lack of optimal breastfeeding led to more than twice the number of deaths among African-American infants than white infants in computer models. This finding was published in a recent study co-authored by Dr. Alison Stuebe, Distinguished Scholar of Infant and Young Child Feeding in the Department of Maternal and Child Health.

Parry represents CGBI at WABA conference in Malaysia

November 15, 2016 Kathy Parry, project director at Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute, was an invited panelist at the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) Global Breastfeeding Partners' Forum, held Oct. 2-5 in Penang, Malysia.

Sullivan appointed director of Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute

Catherine Sullivan, clinical assistant professor of maternal and child health at the Gillings School, has been named director of the Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute (CGBI). She succeeds the late Dr. Miriam Labbok, CGBI’s founding director. CGBI was established in 2006, through the gift of an anonymous donor, to increase quality of care for women and children and to promote breastfeeding and breastfeeding research.
