Alumnus honored with Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers

Dr. Matthew Wheeler, Gillings School alumnus and CDC researcher, received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government upon science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. President Barack Obama announced the award for Wheeler and 101 other American scientists on Jan. 9.

Camille McGirt, health behavior master’s student at the Gillings School, was featured on the Emmy Award-winning “The Dr. Oz Show” on Nov. 28.

UNC researchers create first model of MERS-CoV virus in mouse populations

Researchers from UNC have announced a new mouse model for Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection. This publication marks the first time that an animal model has successfully reproduced the MERS-CoV disease symptoms seen in human patients.

ESE researchers awarded large supercomputing grant from DOE

A team of researchers, including two UNC faculty members and an alumnus, has been awarded a large grant from the United States Department of Energy (DOE). Through the Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment program, they will receive 115 million core hours of use on the world’s third-fastest supercomputer.

Characklis named Singer Distinguished Professor

Dr. Gregory Characklis, professor in the Gillings School's Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering and director of the Center for Watershed Science and Management in the UNC Institute for the Environment, has been named the Phillip C. Singer Distinguished Professor of environmental sciences and engineering.

JAMA study: Palliative care improves patient quality of life and symptom burden

November 21, 2016 Palliative care was associated with statistically and clinically significant improvements in measures of patient quality of life and symptom burden, in a JAMA study led by Dr. Dio Kavalieratos, adjunct professor in health policy and management at the Gillings School.

Steve Wing, beloved teacher and committed activist, dies at 64

Dr. Steve Wing, activist for environmental justice and advocate for human rights, mentor and friend to many, died peacefully Nov. 9 after a valiant battle with cancer. An associate professor of epidemiology, Wing had been a member of the Gillings School faculty since 1985.

Student-developed app to link refugees with reproductive health services

mAdapt is a new app currently being co-developed by an alumna and two students of the Department of Maternal and Child Health. The mobile app uses cell phone technology to provide refugees with fast answers to questions about pressing reproductive health needs.

Schoenbach honored with APHA’s Lilienfeld Award for excellence in teaching epidemiology

Dr. Victor Schoenbach, associate professor of epidemiology, was selected for the Abraham Lilienfeld Award, given by the American Public Health Association's epidemiology section. Schoenbach accepts the award on Oct. 31, during the APHA’s annual meeting, held in Denver. The award recognizes excellence in the teaching of epidemiology over the course of a career.

Eng, Stafford, Cole and Darity honored at University Day event

Dr. Eugenia Eng and Paula Brown Stafford were honored at UNC's University Day ceremony on Oct. 11. Eng, professor of health behavior, accepted the Edward Kidder Graham Faculty Service Award. Stafford, a biostatistics alumna, was named one of UNC's five distinguished alumni.
