Wheeler named to lead UNC Lineberger’s new community outreach office, aiming to reduce cancer inequities

Dr. Stephanie Wheeler has been named associate director of UNC Lineberger’s new Office of Community Outreach and Engagement. In the new role, she will gather community input to assess the needs of North Carolinians related to cancer prevention, early detection, cancer care and survivorship.

Gillings School mourns loss of Dr. Bill Jenkins, advocate for minority health and witness against racism

Dr. William Carter Jenkins, alumnus and adjunct professor at the Gillings School, died Feb. 17 at the age of 73. Jenkins’s passing was especially poignant given its proximity to the School’s 40th-anniversary Minority Health Conference, of which Jenkins was a founder and decades-long supporter.

Active in public health health leadership for more than 40 years, Toal served as a deputy director for HSD’s Medical Assistance Division from 2014 to 2017. He is a former member of the Gillings School's Public Health Foundation board.
