James E. Grizzle Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients
The James E. Grizzle Distinguished Alumnus Award was established to honor Dr. James Grizzle, former Chair, for his outstanding contributions to biostatistical research, training and service. This award recognizes a biostatistics alumnus for outstanding contributions to biostatistical methodology, consulting and/or teaching. The intent is to identify and encourage rising stars in the field of biostatistics.

Yijuan Hu, PhD, is an associate professor of biostatistics and bioinformatics at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health.
2020 – Yingqi Zhaou
Yingqi Zhao, PhD, is an associate professor in the Public Health Sciences Division at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center.
2019 – Jamie Allen (nee Perin)
Jamie Perin, PhD, is an associate scientist in the Department of International Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
2018 – Jonathon A.L. Gelfond
Jonathon A.L. Gelfond, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences at UT Health San Antonio.
2017 – Seunggeun Lee
Seunggeum Lean, PhD, is as an adjunct professor of biostatistics at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
2016 – Dr. Mike Pennell
Mike Pennell, PhD, is the 2016 recipient of the James E. Grizzle Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Pennell is an associate professor of biostatistics at The Ohio State University.
2015 – Dr. Qingxia Chen
Qingxia (Cindy) Chen, PhD (2005), is the 2015 recipient of the James E. Grizzle Distinguished Alumni Award. She is currently an associate professor of biostatistics and of biomedical informatics in the School of Medicine at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Chen presented a lecture following the awards ceremony titled “Too Many Covariates and Too Few Cases?”
2014 – Dr. Ju-Hyun Park
Dr. Ju-Hyun Park, MS, PhD (2006, 2008), is the 2014 recipient of the James E. Grizzle Distinguished Alumni Award.. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Statistics, Dongguk University, Seoul, the Republic of Korea and a special volunteer in the Biostatistics Branch, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, at US NCI. Dr. Park presented a lecture titled “Hidden heritability and risk prediction based on genome-wide association studies”.
2013 – Dr. Matthew J. Gurka
Dr. Matthew Gurka is the 2013 recipient of the James E. Grizzle Distinguished Alumni Award. He is currently an associate professor and interim chair of the department of biostatistics at West Virginia University. Gurka is the program director for the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s Clinical Research Design, Epidemiology, and Biostatistics program. Gurka presented a lecture following the awards ceremony titled “Biostatistics as a leader in an emerging academic research enterprise.”
2012 – Dr. William K. Pan
Dr. William K. Pan, MS (1999) and DrPH (2003), is the 2012 recipient of the James E. Grizzle Distinguished Alumni Award. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Global Environmental Health at Duke University. He holds a joint appointment at DGHI and the Nicholas School of Environment, and is Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of International Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Pan presented a lecture following the awards ceremony titled “Development of an Early Warning System for Malaria in the Amazon”
