Dr. Andrea Bazán

Dr. Andrea Bazán

Among the new administrative appointees announced on Feb. 4 by President Barack Obama was Andrea Bazán, MSW, MPH, president of Triangle (N.C.) Community Foundation and alumna of the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.

Bazán was appointed to membership on The President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

The Council brings together religious and secular leaders, as well as scholars and experts in fields related to the work of faith-based and neighborhood organizations, to make recommendations to the government about ways to improve partnerships.
In making the appointments, President Obama said, “I am pleased to announce that these experienced and committed individuals have agreed to join this Administration, and I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead.”
Bazán’s career has included work in state government, academia and the nonprofit sector. Prior to joining the Triangle Community Foundation, an organization that connects philanthropic resources with community needs, she was executive director of El Pueblo, a Latino advocacy and public policy organization.
Bazán served as a community advocate before the North Carolina General Assembly for several years and held positions at UNC’s public health school and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. She currently sits on the boards of Meredith College, the Nasher Museum of Duke University, the Hispanics in Philanthropy Leadership Council, and the North Carolina Institute of Medicine.
For many years, Bazán served as member and was chair of the National Council of La Raza, the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights organization. Her community and student mentoring work have been recognized by the YWCA, which inducted Bazán to the Academy of Women in 2010, and by Working Mother Media, in New York, as well as Greensboro, N.C.’s Bennett College for Women. In 2008, Bazán was named one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics by Hispanic Business magazine. She holds master’s degrees in social work and public health from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The President will announce additional members to this Council at a later date. Other Presidential appointments made on Feb. 4 can be found in The White House press release.
