Kathy Barboriak, PhD, and Cheryl Gerringer are among 18 graduates of UNC’s University Leadership Education and Development (U-LEAD) program, a nine-week course of study offered by UNC Human Resources’ Training and Talent Development unit.

Barboriak, assistant dean for information technology at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, and Gerringer, business manager for the School’s Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, completed the program on Nov. 17.

Through peer coaching, project development and simulated activities, U-LEAD participants aimed to become better leaders by sharpening their skills in conflict management, negotiation and ethics, relationship-building and strategic planning.

U-LEAD, originally developed in 1979 as the University Management Development Program (UMDP) to address the leadership training needs of University managers and directors, has served hundreds of employees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and N.C. Central University.

William Frey, assistant manager of UNC Training and Talent Development, called Barboriak and Gerringer “intelligent contributors to the success of the program.”

“For me,” Barboriak said, “the best part of the program was making connections with leaders across UNC and NCCU – people I might not have met otherwise. I have a far greater understanding of our organization at a systemic level, as well as a better appreciation for whom to call to help get things done.””The program really helped me deepen and extend a whole range of skills,” said Gerringer. “Especially valuable were the concrete strategies it offered for communicating effectively and coming to satisfactory resolutions in complex and delicate situations.”

Frey said the University is committed to developing its next generation of leaders. “U-LEAD is an unprecedented opportunity for high-functioning middle managers to receive intensive training in the knowledge, skills and behaviors that will increase their effectiveness now and in the future at Carolina (and at NCCU),” he said. “We can’t imagine a better investment in our training dollars.”

The application deadline for the 2011 U-LEAD training is March 15, 2011. More information is available on the Human Resources website or by contacting program coordinator William Frey at 962-9685 or will_frey@unc.edu.
