An article appearing in the April issue of Academic Medicine describes the history of a fruitful collaboration between the UNC Schools of Public Health and Medicine.

The health care and prevention concentration in the master’s of public health degree, begun in 1997 and offered through the Public Health Leadership Program at the School of Public Health, successfully has met the unique needs of students with clinical science backgrounds and interests.

By 2007, more than 20 percent of the students in the UNC medical class of 160 were pursuing a master’s of public health at some time during medical school. A number of Duke University medical students also participate in the program.

The journal article, “The MD-MPH Program at the University of North Carolina,” is authored by Drs. Russ Harris, Anthony Viera, Linda Kinsinger, and Sue Tolleson-Rinehart, who have joint affiliations with the two schools, and Dr. Georgette Dent, from the School of Medicine.
