Ammerman honored with Brooks Award for Public Service

Dr. Alice Ammerman
Alice Ammerman, DrPH, nutrition professor in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and director of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, has received the 2011 Ned Brooks Award for Public Service. Ammerman was honored for creating lasting and collaborative relationships that have resulted in broad service to the community. The award recognizes an individual faculty or staff member at UNC-Chapel Hill who has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to public service and enabled such service by others. The award is named after Edward F. (Ned) Brooks, DrPH, clinical professor of health policy and management in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and longtime mentor and advocate who has inspired others to make a difference in their communities.

“I can’t tell you how delighted I was when I heard that Alice had won the award,” Brooks said. “She is not only a first-rate scholar and educator but is one of the most caring persons I’ve ever known. Her nonstop efforts to improve people’s health throughout North Carolina and beyond make her the ideal public health practitioner. She’s a gem.” Ammerman’s community-based participatory research is developed in partnership with community members to meet their specific needs. She engages young academics, undergraduates, graduate students and experts to create strategic partnerships to approach problems. “Alice Ammerman is known across campus and throughout the state for her innovative and inclusive approach to nutrition-related problems,” said Lynn Blanchard, PhD, director of the Carolina Center for Public Service. “Whether serving on a statewide taskforce, supporting undergraduate and graduate student efforts or designing cutting edge research, she works to ensure that those most at risk from underserved groups benefit from her efforts. She embodies the servant leadership model of Ned Brooks and is an ideal recipient of this honor.” A previous recipient from the UNC public health school is Pam Silberman, DrPH, clinical assistant professor of health policy and management, who received the Brooks Award in 2008. Ammerman will accept her award on Friday, April 1, at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center.
