Dr. Mekbib works with the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Research Evidence for Sexual and Reproductive Health participating in activities on implementation science and
improvement science for prevention of maternal and newborn deaths
globally as well as assisting in planning and coordination of new programs,
policies and practices for this field; conducts systematic reviews
and inform policy implementation; and contributes to the development of a knowledge management system for
implementation science and improvement science to support the
implementation and improvement of global maternal and child health
programs. He contributes to coursework for implementation science for global maternal and child health.
Dr. Mekbib, an obstetrician/gynecologist, served as head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yekatit
12 Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he led the interface of medicine and public health. He helped to lead a major non-governmental organization’s efforts to
promote sexual and reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa as well as
guiding policy change in safe motherhood, reproductive health and family
planning in the Federal Ministry of Health. He was a founding member
and past president of the Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists and served as editor-in-chief of the Ethiopian Journal of
Reproductive Health – the first journal on sexual and reproductive
health and rights in Ethiopia.
