Piehler’s research focuses on transport and processing of nutrients and carbon, particularly the roles played by microbial communities at the land-water margin. His work spans a broad range of both microbial systems and coastal habitats. He is particularly interested in how human activity affects the interactions between pollutants and native microbial communities in coastal systems, and the challenges and opportunities that those interactions present.
