About

Kira S. Jones has nearly 15 years of experience teaching, advising, and mentoring students. Prior to joining the ESE team, she served as the Graduate Student Services Manager in the Department of Sociology. Kira has also spent 15 years working in women’s health with a variety of non-profit organizations across the country. Her academic research and activist writings have focused on how the rhetoric of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month emphasizes personal responsibility over social context, obscuring the need for social justice, environmental protections, and collective responsibility to address and end the breast cancer epidemic. Before moving to North Carolina in 2019, Kira was the Communications Manager for the San Francisco-based activist and education organization, Breast Cancer Action, and is a former Board Member of the National Women’s Health Network based in Washington, D.C. Kira brings a vast skill-set and knowledge of student services and advocacy work to her role as the Academic Program Services Coordinator that will help keep quality student experiences as the focus of what the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering does best. In 2017, Kira received the University of Utah’s Outstanding Academic Advisor award for her work as the Academic Advising Coordinator for the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah. Kira holds a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication from the University of Utah and a Master's Degree in Communication Studies from the University of Montana.
