About

Jacquana Smith is a social/clinical research specialist with the Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute (CGBI) in the Department of Maternal and Child Health. At CGBI, Jacquana is a breastfeeding specialist for ENRICH Carolinas, an initiative funded by The Duke Endowment to increase the number of births in the Carolinas occurring in facilities working to improve maternity care practices through Baby-Friendly designation or a similar state recognition program.

Jacquana is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She is passionate about lactation and the need for equity and dismantling systemic issues that prevent babies from accessing human-milk. She is passionate about teaching and has been invited to guest lecture locally and internationally. She is the conference coordinator of the International Lactation Consultant Association and a lactation consultant at UNC Medical Center.

Staff/Administrative Duties

At CGBI, Jacquana is a clinical research specialist and for the ENRICH Carolinas, a Duke Endowment-funded effort to increase the number of hospitals implementing The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding through Baby-Friendly USA’s D4 Pathway and/or North Carolina Maternity Center Breastfeeding Friendly Designation (NCMCBFD). Jacquana provides coaching and technical assistance to hospitals and healthcare facilities nationwide to improve maternity care practices and breastfeeding outcomes.
