About

Dr. Viera holds appointments as adjunct professor in the Department of Epidemiology and adjunct professor in PHLP at UNC. He currently serves as chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Viera has a special interest in cardiovascular disease prevention, and to that end is leading research in controlling blood pressure and combating obesity. He has published over 200 articles, book chapters, monographs and books, and has been the recipient of a number of research and teaching awards.

Research Activities

Dr. Viera's current areas of interest include examining new food labeling schemes and their effects on calories purchased and physical activity. In the Hypertension Research Program, he is examining strategies for incorporating ambulatory BP monitoring and home BP monitoring into clinical care (both for diagnosis and monitoring) to improve accurate diagnosis of hypertension and attain better control of BP.
