(Under the direction of Dr. Michael Flynn)

The risk of dermal exposure to toxic vapor and aerosol is increasingly gathering attention of epidemiologists, toxicologists and industrial hygienists. Aerosol mass deposition was measured on wool cards and cotton cards used as surrogates for hairy human arms. This study is aimed primarily at establishing a methodology for aerosol deposition measurement on hairy material. The second objective is to validate a theoretical model to predict the aerosol mass collected by hair fibers. The cards were weighed before and after two hours exposure to oil aerosol in a wind tunnel to estimate collected mass. To prevent the weight change of the wool and cotton cards due to moisture, the cards were coated with epoxy. The average mass collected on the wool cards was 12.7 (?3.6) mg, and the average mass was 8.9 (?2.1) mg for the cotton cards. On the other hand, the computer simulation showed the wool card would collect 16.48 mg and the cotton card would collect 25.29 mg. The measured and predicted values for the cotton cards differ significantly and, moreover, the cotton card mass collection is less efficient than the wool card mass collection in spite of the opposite result of the computer model.

There is uncertainty in the measured mass for the cotton cards due to moisture, which is found by the background measurement. In addition, the great range of the measured aerosol concentration and geometric standard deviation causes the computer output to vary. This study made the first step to establish aerosol mass deposition measurement method and showed the issues that a future research needs to address, including how to control moisture and measure accurate aerosol concentration and size distribution.
