Janet Place’s “Workforce Development Roadmap” received Best Leadership Project. As the director of the Southeast Public Health Training Center, part of the NC Institute for Public Health at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, Place leads workforce development efforts and has created new approaches to enhance training, education, and competency-based learning across public health professional groups. Place collaborated with the Public Health Foundation, the National Public Health Training Center Network and academics and practitioners from around the country to develop the national Tier 1 (Entry Level/non MPH) Core Public Health Competencies. These competencies will be used to create a roadmap for professional development by more clearly defining the expected level of proficiency on a continuum. This will help employers determine how to better assess their employees, provide training and build career ladders.

Ed Rivers, environmental health specialist with the Catawba County Health Department, presented “Model Environmental Health Program” and also received a Best Leadership Project award. Rivers’ goal was advancing the state of practice through use of technology and continuous quality improvement.

The SEPHLI Scholars’ Choice Award winners were Roxanne Holloman, health director for Beaufort County, and Rachel Long, public health epidemiologist at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. Holloman’s project was entitled “Champion for LEAN Quality Improvement Process as a Method of On-going Continuous Improvement” and Ms. Long’s project was “Expanding Public Health Epidemiology in Western North Carolina.”
