Whitehead wins 2007 Bunker Award
The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is pleased to announce Todd P. Whitehead (MSEE, Leith Advisor) as the recipient of the 2007 George C. Bunker Award. ESE Professor and Chair, Mike Aitken presented this award to Whitehead at the ESE Ice Cream Social held on April 24, 2007. Whitehead received his BS degree with highest distinction in civil engineering with a minor in history from the University of Virginia. At Virginia, he was awarded the Gaylord Scholarship, the C. William Hardman Achievement Award, and the Class of 1986 Endowed Scholarship. He enrolled in ESE’s MSEE program in fall 2005 and plans to graduate in May 2007. Whitehead will attend UC Berkeley next fall for his PhD working on a validation study that is part of a larger epidemiological childhood-leukemia study. Whitehead’s research interests are in the interface between exposure assessment and environmental epidemiology; specifically with regard to particles or other air pollutants. His master’s thesis dealt with evaluating a passive aerosol sampler that measures mass concentrations and size distributions of an aerosol. He is described as “a self-starter, works independently, and does excellent work,” by his nominator, Professor Leith. The Bunker Award was established in honor of Dr. George C. Bunker, a sanitary engineer and benefactor of the University of North Carolina and is given annually by the Department to an MSEE candidate who shows the most outstanding scholarship and professional promise. |
