Stephanie Baker, a doctoral student in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, is very busy this summer. She spends several days a week talking to middle school, high school, and college student groups about public health, career opportunities, and academic programs at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Through interactive games and role playing, she engages the middle school and high school students. Her work with college students includes laboratory tours and student panels addressing career and graduate program opportunities in public health.

An example of Stephanie’s outreach includes her workshops for the UNC Chapel Hill North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network Pre-College Summer Program (NC-MSEN). On July 8, middle school students participating in the NC-MSEN Program visited Rosenau Hall. After learning about public health, the students rehearsed and then performed skits on public health topics including bullying and littering. One group even wrote a song about the dangers of smoking. A day later, high school students from the NC-MSEN Program played a trivia game to learn about public health professions. The students also played a game where they determined the risk factors that people faced in their lives and the health consequences of the behaviors.

Students seem to enjoy the interactive sessions and learn about public health in the process. Stephanie has worked with several groups this summer including UNC Project Uplift, Biostatistics Summer Undergraduate Research and Education (BSURE) Program, North Carolina Health Careers Access Program (NC HCAP) Summer Enrichment Preparation Program, and the SURE/SUUPPRT Programs. If students are unsure about public health before attending the workshops, Stephanie Baker is there to help them learn.
