UNC School of Public Health Best Grad School for Physician Executives

The School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been named the top executive master’s program for physician-executives by Modern Healthcare magazine for the third time since the publication began ranking programs in 2003. The ranking is based on a list of programs awarding MBA, MHA or similar management degrees in courses that focus on physicians and is offered via distance learning. Programs were ranked on number of days students must spend on campus, the age of the program, the length of time to complete, and cost of total tuition. “Ours was the only Master’s of Public Health on the list,” said Peggy Leatt, PhD, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Administration. “It shows the value placed on understanding core public health concepts by physicians who are in senior positions in health systems, multi-speciality practices, hospitals or other executive positions.” The Executive Master’s Program offers two degrees – Master in Health Administration (MHA) and Master in Public Health (MPH). All of the coursework is conducted online, with the exception of eight days during the school year in which the students attend orientation, classes and other programs on campus. Approximately 20 percent of the UNC Medical School students are now getting their MPH along with their MD degrees. And a lot of practicing physicians are turning to the Carolina School of Public Health to get the additional training they need to fill leadership roles in health administration.
