The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Department of Maternal and Child Health will offer an online master’s degree program beginning in Spring 2011 to complement its established residential training programs. The online degree will increase working professionals’ access to graduate education focused on improving the health of women, children and families in domestic and international settings.Applications for the initial online degree cohort are due Oct. 15. Prospective distance education students can apply for a 50-credit Master of Public Health (MPH) or a 42-credit Master of Science in Public Health. The online program utilizes the same admission criteria and curricula requirements as does UNC’s residential master’s program in maternal and child health.

Developed with support from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Maternal and Child Health, the new program will provide the flexibility of distance delivery to students seeking a part-time course of graduate study in maternal and child health. The program defines maternal and child health in the broadest sense – to include physical, political, economic, cultural and psychosocial factors. Consistent with a public health approach, major emphasis is placed on investigating and teaching population-based solutions to complex, multifactorial health problems.

“The UNC Department of Maternal and Child Health has engaged in leadership training for more than five decades,” says Anita Farel, DrPH, associate chair for graduate studies in the department. “We are very excited to be expanding our reach through contemporary technologies and evidence-based distance education pedagogy.”

The curriculum for the online degree program builds upon a 10-credit online Certificate in Maternal and Child Health Leadership introduced this year. The certificate includes three graduate courses: “Foundations of Maternal and Child Health” (MHCH 701 and 702) and a leadership seminar.

Prospective online degree program and certificate students can find additional information on the public health school’s website. Applications also will be accepted until March 1, 2011 for matriculation in fall 2011.
