UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Public Health Leadership Program, with support from Fogarty International Center American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds, is offering a new online Certificate in Global Health.

The course of study, which offers formal academic certification for students not seeking degrees, examines the complexities inherent in improving health on a global scale.

Developed in partnership with the School’s Office of Global Health, the interdisciplinary program is designed to strengthen the global health competencies of health care practitioners in North Carolina, across the nation and around the world.

“The Public Health Leadership Program has a long history of success in online leadership education,” says Hollie Pavlica, DrPH, clinical assistant professor in the Program, “and we are uniquely positioned to meet the challenges faced by health leaders around the world.”

However, Pavlica says, “we also want to treat those challenges as opportunities to improve leadership skills for those working abroad and to train domestic students about global health challenges.”

The curriculum for the program includes four courses, totaling 12 graduate credit hours, in “Critical Issues in Global Health” (fall 2010), “Global Health Ethics” (spring 2011), “Global Infectious Disease Epidemiology” (summer 2011), and “Monitoring and Evaluation” (fall 2011).

“The certificate program is patterned after and built upon the residential Graduate Certificate in Global Health offered by the Office of Global Health and the online certificates and master’s degrees offered by the Public Health Leadership Program,” said Gretchen Van Vliet, MPH, director of the Office of Global Health. “These distance learning certificate and degree programs have been very successful.”

Applications for fall 2010 will be accepted until June 1.
