UNC and Germany’s University of Ulm collaborate on distance-learning program

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Gillings School of Global Public Health has announced its collaboration with the University of Ulm, in Ulm, Germany, for the October 2010 launch of a distance-education master’s degree program called “@dvanced Oncology.” The curriculum of the two-year program, which includes clinical research and management, is designed for clinical oncologists and scientists in the field of oncology who want to develop additional skills while maintaining their professional work schedules.

UNC’s Department of Epidemiology, led in the endeavor by Professor Gerardo Heiss, has collaborated with the University of Ulm for more than 20 years to help develop its public health and epidemiology programs. Among the outcomes of the partnership is an annual summer institute, held in Germany every summer since 1989, which draws students from all over the world. Four UNC public health faculty members participate in the week-long course each year, teaching a variety of topics. Wayne Rosamond, PhD, professor of epidemiology at the UNC public health school and teacher at the Ulm Summer Institute since 1994, served as liaison in developing this latest project, the online degree program proposed and led by Dr. Marcel Sailer, a member of the University of Ulm’s medical faculty and assistant director of its International Center for Advanced Studies in Health Sciences and Services. “Last year Dr. Sailer approached the UNC team about the planning of a Master-Online Program, and we offered both encouragement and ideas for its design,” Rosamond said. “We at UNC are very excited about the new online course in cancer epidemiology and thrilled to build the collaboration with this new phase of our long-standing and successful global partnership with the University of Ulm.”

Also involved in the new course are UNC epidemiology faculty members Melissa Troester, PhD, who has expertise in cancer epidemiology and experience in online teaching; Til Stuermer, MD, PhD, director of the UNC-GlaxoSmithKline Center of Excellence in Pharmacoepidemiology and Public Health; and Lorraine Alexander, DrPH, a distance learning specialist with the UNC public health school’s North Carolina Center for Public Health Preparedness at the N.C. Institute for Public Health.
