Karl Umble, Ph.D., program planner and evaluator for the North Carolina Institute for Public Health (NCIPH), has been chosen as the recipient of the 2007 Balderson Award for Support of Public Health Leadership Development. This award, presented by the National Public Health Leadership Development Network, is given to an individual who has worked tirelessly for the promotion of training programs for public health leaders, often in the background without public recognition. “Karl Umble exemplifies this role through his diligent work to provide customer-focused, user-friendly evaluations of NCIPH’s executive education programs,” said Mary Davis, director of evaluation services at NCIPH. Umble’s research has been published in public health’s notable journals including recent pieces in the American Journal of Public Health about the National Public Health Leadership Institute and the Management Academy for Public Health. His chapter “Evaluation for Planning and Improving Leadership Development Programs” was published in the Handbook of Leadership Development Evaluation (Jossey-Bass, 2006). Umble has served as evaluation advisor for numerous leadership and management training programs that the NCIPH offers including the Management Academy for Public Health, the Southeast and National Public Health Leadership Institutes, Emerging Leaders in Public Health, and Leadership Novant. The NCIPH is a national leader in providing continuing education for public health professionals. He received his MPH from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and his Ph.D. in Adult Education from the University of Georgia. The National Public Health Leadership Development Network created this award in memory of Tom Balderson, who championed public health leadership development at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The official award will be presented during the National Public Health Leadership Network’s Annual Conference, April 25 in St. Louis.
