Two Bunker Awards were given to ESE students in 2006. This year’s awardees are Angella C. Rinehold (MSEE, Singer Advisor) and J. Andrew Westbrook (MS 2006, DiGiano Advisor).Angella Rinehold has a BS degree in Civil Engineering from the University of California-Davis and came to UNC in pursuit of her MSEE degree after working for 5 years with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. She was awarded a Merit Assistantship from the Graduate School for her first year of study at UNC. During this second year of her study, she worked with Okun Distinguished Professor Philip C. Singer on the assessment and control of nitrification arising from chloramination of finished drinking water in North Carolina, a project sponsored by the Urban Water Consortium of the Water Resources Research Institute. Outside the classroom, she is heavily involved with, and volunteers her time to Engineers Without Borders. She demonstrates outstanding scholarship and professional promise, two criteria that are the basis for the Bunker Award.

Andrew Westbrook received a BS from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2004 and completed his MS from ESE in May of 2006. Andrew’s Master’s Technical Report described a comprehensive laboratory study of the factors affecting the rate of chloramine decay due to reactions with the pipe walls in a water distribution system. During this project, he refurbished a device previously developed by Professor Francis A DiGiano known as the pipe section reactor that studies the rate for free chlorine decay due to similar type of reactions with pipe walls. In addition to this project, Andrew assisted Professor DiGiano in conducting two field studies of water residence times in the distribution systems of Raleigh and Greenville (NC). Currently, Andrew is working with Jeff Hughes at the Institute of Government on institutional aspects of water utilities. Andrew has many different skills that will carry him far in the practice community.
