Camille McGirt and Madhulika Vulimiri were inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece. Rachel Holtzman was inducted into the Order of the Grail-Valkyries

McGirt was inducted for her innovation in health education among young women both locally and statewide. She is co-founder of Healthy Girls Save the World, a nonprofit organization providing girls ages 8 to 15 with the tools and knowledge to create and sustain healthy well-rounded lifestyles.

Under her strategic leadership, Healthy Girls Save the World organizes free events for young women to visit UNC, gain mentorship from the University’s world-class women’s varsity athletes, engage in physical activity, hear from nutritionists in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, and learn about respectful and positive relationships through interactive activities.

A former Division I basketball player, McGirt has received national, state and local recognition for her social venture and is commonly cited as a role model for other UNC students interested in tackling social complexities. In addition to her work with Healthy Girls, she is a Kenan Biddle UNC-Duke Partnership Grant awardee, a participant in the Robert E. Bryan Fellowship for APPLES Service Learning, an Admissions Ambassador, and a dedicated member of the Multicultural Student Recruitment Committee (MSRC).

For her sincere efforts in fostering sustainable social justice and global health development at UNC as director of development for the Campus Y for the past two years, Madhulika Vulimiri successfully crafted and implemented the YFund, a student-run microgrant system that disburses funds to social justice ventures via a rigorous and competitive process.

Vulimiri’s focus on creating deliberate mechanisms of accountability within the YFund has transformed the Campus Y culture into one that embraces innovative, sustainable project development. This year, she aided in raising more than $20,000 for the YFund, ensuring long-term success and viability for the program.

Her passion for justice transcends the Campus Y, as she has served as the co-chair of the Student Global Health Committee at Gillings School of Global Public Health. In this role, she organized many programs that foster a safe space for discourse on issues of global health.

Vulimiri also has channeled her commitment to the arts while at Carolina, sharing her beautiful, velvety voice with fans for three years through Cadence, one of UNC’s all-female a cappella groups. Within Cadence, she brings a calm demeanor and insightful point of view to nearly every conversation, most recently highlighted in her role as Parent and Alumni Relations co-chair.

Founded in 1904, the Order of the Golden Fleece is the University’s oldest and highest honorary society. Those eligible for selection must possess exemplary character and include juniors, seniors and graduate students who have made a significant, lasting contribution to the University and others who have made a significant contribution to undergraduate student life.

Rachel Holtzman was inducted into the Order of the Grail-Valkyries at an induction dinner held on April 10. She was nominated for her curiosity, as well as for her community-organizing with the Scholars Latino initiative.

Founded in 1920 and 1941, the Order of the Grail-Valkyries recognizes students of outstanding character who have made significant contributions to the university’s academic climate through excellence in scholarship, dynamic leadership and innovative service. Applications must specifically discuss the nominee’s contributions to the University’s academic and/or intellectual climate.
