Team for Kids is an organization made of more than 1,000 adult runners from around the world who raise funds for the New York Road Runners Foundation’s (NYRR) youth fitness programs while they train for NYRR races and marathons. Members of Teams for Kids support fitness programs that “improve health, combat obesity and enhance personal development of children from low-income communities.” NYRR programs, funded primarily through the support from Team for Kids, encourage engagement of children in lifetime fitness while also building self-discipline and self-esteem. Since 2002, Team for Kids has raised more than eight million dollars to fund NYRR programs that transform the lives of many children nationwide and in Cape Town, South Africa. Chapel Hill has its very own Team for Kids -the TarHeel Team for Kids! Members of this team include Alison, Kiyah, Noel, Kelly, Meghan, and Natalie, all of whom have a fierce passion for running and are committed to improving the health and fitness of children across the nation and around the world. Tarheel Team for Kids trained daily and ran in several marathons in preparation for the New York City Marathon, which was held on November 2, 2008. While in training, the team participated in the Michael K. Hooker 4th annual 5k Charity Road Race on October 5th, 2008. The Hooker 5k honors the life of the late Chancellor, Dr. Michael K. Hooker the namesake of the SPH building with the same name) and proceeds from the event fund cancer research.
