Question

What should I include in my personal statement?

Answer
  • Address all issues requested in the department’s application materials.
  • Demonstrate that your career goals have been well thought out.
  • Demonstrate that you understand what the program offers and demands.
  • Provide details of any experience relevant to your program of interest.
  • Highlight strengths, but don’t dwell on facts readily evident elsewhere (e.g., grades, GRE scores)
  • If you can identify weaknesses in your application, admissions committee members will likely identify them, too. Address weaknesses directly, explaining extenuating circumstances, as appropriate, or providing evidence that your skill levels are more accurately reflected by some other assessment. These details may be included in your statement of interest or in a separate letter directed to the Admissions Committee.
Question

Who should write my letters of recommendation?

Answer
  • Recommendations may be a mix of academic and professional letters.
  • Letter writers should be able to speak about your strengths and level of “fit” with the department to which you are applying.
  • Avoid soliciting letters from family friends, other students, or employees you supervise.
  • The ideal letter writer is a person who knows and is positive about. That knowledge comes through in their letter.
