Student Awards

Each year, outstanding students at the Gillings School for Global Public Health receive awards and honors recognizing their excellence in teaching, research, service and professional development. These awards are supported by generous contributions from donors to the School and University who value the current and future contributions of our students.

Funding Opportunities

In addition to this partial list of funding opportunities, the Graduate School offers more information about fellowships and funding.

International Students: Unless you have written confirmation from the School or University, you will not receive funding and should plan on financing your study in the U.S. as you have indicated on your Graduate Student Financial Certificate Form through the Office of International Student and Scholar Services.

Online Students: Online MPH students that receive fellowship offers will be notified by their Online MPH admissions counselor. How to Apply for Financial Aid

Step 1: Complete the paperwork.

To qualify for most funding sources, all students (including online learners) must apply for financial aid through UNC’s Office of Scholarships and Student Aid (OSSA). Apply for financial aid regardless of need to ensure that you are eligible for as many opportunities as possible. All aid distributed through the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid (even merit-related awards) requires the submission of a FAFSA form. The Federal School Code for UNC is 002974.

Step 2: Check with the academic coordinator who supports your program.

Coordinator contact information for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students is located on the Student Affairs page. Note that you may need to complete additional financial forms for department-sponsored scholarships and assistance.

Step 3: Departments submit funding award nominations.

Your home department will select a number of applicants (based on merit or a combination of merit and need) for funding from the UNC Graduate School and the Gillings School of Global Public Health.

If selected for funding students will receive an email from their department or MPH concentration starting around mid-March. Award recipients for donor based scholarships are asked via email to complete a FERPA release and survey used to collect information about themselves and their research or studies at the Gillings School for a report to be shared with the donors who support their scholarship or award.
