UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health was well represented at the recent 48th annual meeting of the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER).  Held in Denver June 16-19, the international professional conference, sponsored by the largest general epidemiology society, was attended by 79 people associated with the School’s Department of Epidemiology, including 57 alumni, several of whom were meeting and Society awardees.

Gillings School alumni who received SER awards included (l-r) Drs. Louise Brinton, Sunni Mumford and Ashley Naimi.

Epidemiology doctoral students Anna Bauer and Eboneé Butler participated in the annual SER dissertation workshop in which a team of leading epidemiologists work with outstanding doctoral students to refine their project plans. Doctoral student Julia Ward was awarded a meeting scholarship. In their poster sessions, doctoral students Angela Liu and Kristen Moore won best student poster and best poster overall, respectively.

“We’re so proud of our continuing strong influence at the annual meeting of the major general epidemiologic society in the country” said Andrew Olshan, PhD, professor and chair of the Gillings School’s Department of Epidemiology, who also attended the conference. “The UNC presence is striking. Our alumni attend in large numbers, and we are quite visible at the oral presentation and posters sessions, as well as being winners of career awards.”

The Society for Epidemiologic Research was established in 1968. At the annual meeting, two of UNC’s former faculty and legendary epidemiologists, the late Drs. John Cassel and Al Tyroler, are honored, respectively, with a special keynote lecture and the society’s dissertation award.

More than 900 epidemiology professionals attended this year’s conference.
