Dr. Peggye Dilworth-Anderson

For the second year, the Alzheimer’s Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTAART) hosted a mentoring breakfast during the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC). Peggye Dilworth-Anderson, PhD, professor of health policy and management at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, co-led the event with members of the Alliance of Women Alzheimer’s Researchers.

Dilworth-Anderson has a long history of researching aging and health, as well as offering mentoring advice. She is the recipient of the 2006 Minority Task Force Mentor Award from the Gerontological Society of America and, from 2005 to 2015, she served as co-chair of a mentoring group to support junior scientists interested in aging research. At the AAIC mentoring breakfast, held in Toronto, Canada, on July 25, she guided attendees from 20 countries in a discussion about selecting mentors and developing those relationships.

The event paired nearly 200 students, postdoctoral fellows and early-stage investigators with established scientific leaders at small round-table discussions. Topics of conversation included how to identify a mentor with the correct expertise, how to recognize and coordinate different working styles, and how to develop a mentoring contract.

In addition, the Alzheimer’s Association provided resources — many identified by Dilworth-Anderson – to provide a basis for attendees to feel comfortable approaching mentors and to think creatively about advancing their own careers.

More information about the mentoring and networking opportunities available through AAIC and ISTAART can be found on The Alzheimer’s Association website. The organization is proud to support the next generation of scientists, whose innovative ideas and approaches will address the complexity of Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
