More than $10,000 was collected for the scholarships through a fundraising campaign managed by the class, including a $3,000 contribution from the School’s Alumni Association. The student campaign, which has completed its second year, was overseen in 2012-2013 by student government president Katlyn Donohue.

Scholarship awardees included Reuben Adatorwovor (biostatistics), Lakshmi Gopalakrishnan (maternal and child health), Jasmine Hutchinson (health policy and management), Eli Lovell (nutrition), Zinaida Mahmutefendic (Public Health Leadership Program),  Alycia Overbo (environmental sciences and engineering), Shabbar Ranapurwala (epidemiology) and Kathryn Stein (health behavior).

The awards presentation was made at the start of a panel discussion, “If I’d Known Then What I Know Now.” Moderated by alumnus Jamal Jones, MBA, MHA, the panel included alumni Aaron Fleischauer, PhD, Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Career Epidemiology Field Officer assigned to North Carolina; Lisa Harrison, MPH, health director of Granville-Vance (N.C.) District Health Department; Sherika Hill, PhD, postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University School of Medicine; and Meg Molloy, DrPH, executive director of North Carolina Prevention Partners.

Each fall, the School’s alumni association invites graduates to speak about their roles in the public health community and answer students’ questions about job opportunities in the field.

A video of the event is available online.
