UNC will host “Navigating the Global American South: Global Health and Regional Solutions,” a conference in the Research Triangle Park, April 19-20.Experts will explore regional approaches to public health and ask what experiences translate between the American South and other world regions. Recovery from Hurricane Katrina; nutrition and obesity; HIV/AIDS and Hispanic access to health care will be among the topics discussed. Speakers will include:

    John Briscoe, country director for Brazil, the World Bank;

  • Pierre Buekens, dean, Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine;
  • Leah Devlin, director, N.C. Division of Public Health;
  • Judith Rodin, president, Rockefeller Foundation;
  • William L. Roper, dean, UNC School of Medicine; chief executive officer, UNC Health Care;
  • Jaime Sepulveda Amor, visiting professor, University of California, San Francisco; former director, National Institutes of Health, Mexico; and
  • Louis W. Sullivan, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The conference, to be held at the Hilton Raleigh-Durham Airport Conference Center, will be sponsored by UNC’s Center for Global Initiatives, Center for the Study of the American South and Office of Global Health.
