Singer Receives Newton Underwood Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching
June 27, 2006 | |
In 1973, the Newton Underwood Memorial Award was initiated in memory of Dr. Newton Underwood to recognize his contributions to the teaching profession. The many students who enjoyed the privilege of having Dr. Underwood as an instructor attributed his success as a teacher to his unique ability to stimulate the interest of his students and, in a personal manner, effectively convey his lecture material. This award is presented to ESE faculty members who exhibit the conscientious dedication to students and teaching typified by Newton Underwood. Nominations, discussions, and a vote of ESE students determine the recipient. This year they have chosen Okun Professor Philip C. Singer. This will be Singer’s third Underwood Award since his arrival at UNC-CH in 1973.
Dr. Singer’s teaching style is one that both challenges his students and does not leave anyone behind. He is a patient teacher and has the unique ability to view the subject matter from the students’ unfamiliar perspective, even though he is so familiar with it himself. He seems to take great care and pride in what he does, and he imparts that to others through his teaching. Finally, he seems sincerely excited when we show up at his door to ask him questions.
