Dr. Damian Shea

UNC SRP Researcher Damian Shea, of NC State University, presented findings from a study of the potential for exposure to and accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other oil components in the food chain following the BP Deepwater Horizon well blowout during a symposium at the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry’s annual meeting in mid-November.

Using new sampling technologies and chemical analyses, Shea found that weathered oil is less likely to shed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, into the water and thus threaten sea life than fresh crude oil. In a recent Science News story, Shea concludes that “weathering reduces oil toxicity.”Read the full Science News article
