Dr. Rumay Alexander

I never forget that slaves always had me in their dreams

The cover of Nurse Leader‘s June issue features Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, co-chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
A clinical professor at UNC’s School of Nursing and director of the nursing school’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, Alexander has collaborated extensively with public health school leadership since 2010 to help develop a plan to achieve enhanced diversity and inclusion in the public health school.
Alexander has devoted more than 20 years to public policy, advocacy, teaching and health careers development, with an emphasis on cultural diversity issues.
In her interview with the bimonthly journal, Alexander explains how being a woman of color influenced her leadership style.
“When I appear on any stage of life,” she replies, “what accompanies me at all times is the color of my skin. While I might wish that this has no impact, the reality and my experience say otherwise. I never forget that slaves always had me in their dreams and in their thoughts. I am responsible to live out that dream to the best of my ability, and this has always been very important to me… I needed to have the courage to do what was expected … I had a charge to keep.”
“At the school of public health, we are so grateful to Dr. Alexander for the way she has facilitated and enriched our goal of becoming more diverse and inclusive,” said Dean Barbara K. Rimer.
The complete interview is available on the Nurse Leader website.
