Dr. Jamieson

Denise Jean Jamieson, MD, MPH, 1991 alumna of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s public health school, has received one of the University’s five Distinguished Alumni Awards for 2011. She will accept the award on Oct. 12 as part of University Day, an annual event commemorating the official founding of UNC-Chapel Hill.

Jamieson is a captain in the U.S. Public Health Service and chief of the Women’s Health and Fertility Branch in the Division of Reproductive Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She also is a clinical professor in Emory University’s Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

“Denise has made truly outstanding contributions to the field of maternal and child health since she graduated from our department two decades ago,” said Herbert Peterson, MD, professor and chair of the maternal and child health department at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. “I had the real privilege of working with her at CDC and seeing first-hand her important impact on national and global health. Her contributions keep growing each year and we are so very proud of her.”

Peterson, the first chief of CDC’s women’s health and fertility branch, served in that role from 1989 to 1999, during which time Jamieson was an epidemic intelligence service officer in that branch.

“Dr. Jamieson is a scientist whose work has made a major impact on improving pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality worldwide,” said Margaret (Peggy) Bentley, PhD, professor of nutrition and associate dean for global health at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. “She richly deserves the distinguished alumna award, and we are fortunate that she chose to complete her Master of Public Health degree at UNC.”

Bentley and others in the UNC schools of public health and medicine have worked with Jamieson on a CDC-funded study in Malawi. The study aims to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. Jamieson, the principal investigator at CDC, and Charles van der Horst, MD, professor of medicine, associate chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, developmental core director of the UNC Center for AIDS Research in the UNC School of Medicine, and UNC principal investigator, co-led the study, “Breastfeeding, Antiretrovirals and Nutrition” (BAN).

UNC’s distinguished alumni awards have been presented on University Day since 1971. Other recipients this year are Alan Bergman, Frederick Otto Mueller, Linda Ellen Oxendine and Thomas Hart Sayre.Read more about University Day online.
