Rosenau recovering from sprinkler flood
February 15, 2010 | |
Facilities workers are drying out offices in Rosenau Hall after a fire-suppression sprinkler malfunctioned in the building’s attic on Sunday, Feb. 14, dumping about 2,000 gallons of water into the building. Offices most affected were those occupied by Maternal and Child Health on the fourth floor, and Environmental Sciences and Engineering on the first floor. A smaller amount of water also was found on the third floor, but the second floor seems to have remained dry.
Rob Kark, business director, and Brent Wishart, facilities coordinator, led efforts to pump water out of the School on Sunday, assisted by the Chapel Hill Fire Department, campus facilities services and housekeeping. The university has hired a water damage restoration vendor to set up dehumidification equipment to try to save as much drywall, carpeting and ceiling tiles as possible.
The University’s Environment, Health and Safety officials will monitor the vendor’s work and monitor the building over the next two weeks. Faculty, staff and students are asked not to turn off or move any of the drying equipment.
An investigation into the cause of the sprinkler malfunction is continuing, Kark said.
