Four health behavior and health education master’s students at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health have researched and produced two video programs that were broadcast Dec. 5 and 6 on UNC-TV’s “North Carolina Now.” Chris Akiba, producer, and Carlee McConnell, associate producer, worked on a program about fracking for national gas in Lee County, N.C. Jennifer Brown, producer, and Lesley Copeland, associate producer, worked on a project about renewable energy sources, particularly woody biomass. The video projects were developed in a class taught by Tom Linden, MD, Glaxo Wellcome Distinguished Professor of Medical Journalism and director of the Medical and Science Journalism Program in the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication. “I encourage everyone to watch the programs, which are archived online,” Linden said. “The students did a great job in reporting on two complicated and controversial stories.” Others involved in the video reporting and production were associate producers Kelly Izlar, Lydia Wilson and Stephanie Soucheray-Grell (journalism students) and Mike Oniffrey (UNC-TV videographer). Other medical journalism projects were highlighted on the public health school website in 2009 and 2010. # # #
